The great lowland expanses dominate the relief. The Little Alfold is situated in the northwest and is trimmed to the west by extending the eastern sub-Alps. This Little Alfold is parted from the Great Alfold by a low mountain system that extends across Hungary from southwest to northwest.

Nature and Wildlife
Most of the natural vegetation of the country has been destroyed by human activities.
Half of the land is used for cultivation, whereas one-sixth of the land is used for nonagricultural purposes. Other areas constitute meadows, forests, woodlands, and rough pastures.
There are abundant beech trees in higher elevations. However, Oak woodlands and scrubby grasslands make up for the lands at lower elevations.
In terms of animals, you can find wild pigs and deer in the forests at higher elevations. The lowlands houses rodents, partridges, pheasants, and hares. The marsh waterfowl survives in nature reserves only.
Hungary has, however, a diverse marine life. In addition, it houses freshwater fishes such as pike, pike perch, and bream.
